(KRON) -- Silicon Valley's Comic Con conference has been canceled, it announced on its website. The event had been scheduled to happen on October 14 and 15 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, 5001 Great America Parkway. "We regret to inform you that SiliCon, the highly anticipated science, technology, maker and pop culture Con scheduled for October 2023, has been canceled. We understand that this news may come as a disappointment to many, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause," a statement read in part. Mayorkas: US border ‘very challenging’ as asylum limits end

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Friday that authorities faced “extremely challenging” circumstances along the border with Mexico days before pandemic-related asylum restrictions end.A surge of Venezuelan migrants through South Texas, particularly in and around Brownsville, has occurred over the last two weeks for reasons that Mayorkas said were unclear. On Thursday, 4,000 of about 6,000 migrants in Border Patrol custody in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley were Venezuelan.Mayorkas noted that Mexico agreed this week to continue taking back Venezuelans who enter the U.S. illegally after asylum restrictions end Thursday, along with Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans. Military: Contractor error caused Hawaii toxic foam spill

HONOLULU (AP) — An investigation found that a spill of about 1,300 gallons of fire suppressant at a fuel facility in Hawaii was caused by a maintenance contractor improperly installing an air vacuum valve, U.S. military officials said Friday.Aqueous Film Forming Foam, which is used to suppress fires caused by flammable liquids, contain PFAS, a class of chemicals that are slow to degrade in the environment. The firefighting foam liquid concentrate was spilled in November at the Red Hill Bulk Storage Facility near Pearl Harbor. The concentrate pooled on the floor inside the facility and then seeped under a door and onto a paved access road and soil, the military said. The contractor improperly installed an air vacuum valve to the foam system in April 2022, the military said in a statement.
