HIROSHIMA, Japan — As if Russia and China weren’t enough to dominate the G7 agenda, the EU added its own feud with the U.S. on the first day of the Hiroshima summit, calling for transparency on industrial subsidies. In the first session of the summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asked G7 leaders — among them U.S. President Joe Biden — to play fair when it comes to green technology. The EU and the U.S. are still trying to hammer out a deal allowing European companies to share in billions of dollars in U.S. tax incentives for electric vehicles, which has been a major source of transatlantic friction since the Biden administration announced the Inflation Reduction Act last year.Addressing a session on the global economy, von der Leyen told G7 leaders: “This clean-tech race is an opportunity to go faster and further, together … Our competition should create additional manufacturing capacity and not come at each other’s expense.”&...Zelenskyy will make in-person appeal to G7 leaders in Japan

HIROSHIMA, Japan — With Russia’s war on Ukraine nearing a potential inflection point, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to travel to Japan this weekend to address U.S. President Joe Biden and other G7 leaders, drawing on this city’s tragic history as a backdrop for his latest plea to secure more military and financial support.Although the details of Zelenskyy’s travel plans remained opaque due to security concerns, the head of Ukraine’s national defense council, Oleksii Danilov, announced the trip on national television Friday, confirming news reports that he would attend.Zelensky, who has traveled in recent days to the U.K. and other European nations, will fly to Japan after an appearance in Saudi Arabia at the Arab League summit. The spate of travel offered Ukraine’s president the opportunity to make in-person appeals for additional support and to show that his country, still under attack from Russian forces in the air and on the ground, is stable enough for him to tr...Employee arrested after allegedly bringing rifle to Mass General Hospital

A Massachusetts General Hospital employee was arrested Wednesday after allegedly bringing a rifle into the hospital, according to a Boston police report obtained by 7NEWS. The report said police responded to the hospital Wednesday night “for a report of a male experiencing a mental breakdown while reportedly carrying a hunting rifle.”Police continued, saying the man “called 911 and stated that he heard god telling him that, if he did not want to be shot, that he should bring his rifle out and also that police were out to kill him.” The report said a responding officer who talked to the man on the phone was able to determine from background noise on the call that the man was near a hospital or fire station. Police soon learned the hospital was Mass General. Police said a hospital security officer “was able to make contact with the suspect and requested he place the object on the ground; not knowing it was a rifle as it was covered by a shower curtain.”The po...Zelenskyy to attend G7 summit Sunday as world leaders discuss new punishment for Russia over Ukraine

The San Diego Padres came into the season with as much hype as any club in recent memory.Under owner Peter Seidler, the Padres have cast aside their reputation as an irrelevant also-ran to become one of the premier franchises in MLB. San Diego has spent aggressively to assemble a star-studded roster, and this offseason the club shocked the baseball world by signing former Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts to an eye-popping 11-year, $280 million deal.Between that addition and others, the Padres were a popular preseason World Series pick, while the Red Sox were mocked and given little chance to contend. As it turns out, winning the offseason doesn’t necessarily guarantee on-field success.Though Bogaerts has been as great as advertised, the Padres have collectively underachieved through the first quarter of the season. San Diego enters the weekend 20-24, good for fourth in a mediocre NL West, and the offense has been shockingly punchless, ranking fourth-worst in runs scored (172) ...OBF: Hey Joe, go full ‘Town’ or your C’s are going home

Joe Mazzulla loves “The Town.”His “Whose Car We Gonna Take?” sweatshirt was the second-biggest star of the Celtics-Sixers series. We’ve been told that Mazzulla watches the 124-minute Ben Affleck film as often as four times a week. The players have become ensnared in his devotion to the Boston/Charlestown-based crime drama. It has become a muse for these Celtics.“I think it’s ‘Whose car are we taking?’ I think that’s the saying,” said Sixth Man of The Year Malcolm Brogdon (via NESN’s Sean T. McGuire) about the team’s connection to the film. “And it’s basically just ride or die for your guys, the guys you’re on the court with, the guys you’re competing with. It’s having the mentality (of) it doesn’t matter what we’re going to get into, we’re going to do it together.”That is true, especially the “ride or die” part.(Spoiler alert) After surviving a botched robbery of Fenway Park, Affleck’s character Doug MacRay pulls a Tom Brady and departs the chilly climes of Greater Boston for F...Shooting at Ohio auto plant kills 1, sends 2nd victim and alleged gunman to hospital
